Originally from Bulgaria, it was the owner’s dream to come to the U.S. to start a family and business. That was 20 years ago. The family later moved to Sarasota from Wisconsin after visiting on vacation and falling in love with the coastal town.
Elema has been planting and juicing at her own home for as long as she can remember. She and her husband honed their recipes, and the Green Zebra was born. Originally a juice bar, next they added smoothies, and more recently, food.
There are many vegan and gluten-free options, as well as lactose-free. This is the perfect spot to come for a healthy lunch. We tried the Lido Sunset Smoothie, SlimFit Skinny Shot and a freshly made vegan energy bar.
Elema’s passion is to create delicious desserts that even those with food allergies or aversions can enjoy. Her vegan tiramisu, cheesecake and chia pudding are a few favorites. If you’re visiting in fall, try her pumpkin pudding or sweet potato pie.
Everything is made from scratch right here, including sauces on the sandwiches. They don’t use any sweeteners unless you request them – and even then, only honey or fruit juice. They have no microwave and only one stove top.
The Green Zebra is a true labor of love for the owners, who only employ family and friends. Elema spends most of her time here, and loves the energy of all the people who stop in to eat.
Her middle son, Alex, is a very picky eater, so only once a dish is “Alex Approved” does it go on the menu.
What’s in a name? Alex’s favorite animal was the zebra, green because of the lifestyle.
It’s green. It’s different. It’s one of a kind.
